ADDO-Tensions have risen in the Sundays River Valley after a fight between locals and foreigners at a tavern on Saturday night turned deadly. The incident sparked “revenge attacks” that left four people dead and ten injured.
According to Provincial police spokesperson Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli, the clashes occurred between Sunday and Monday. Police have deployed specialized units and maintain a heavy presence in the area. “Arrests are imminent,” Nkohli said, as police investigate four counts of murder and ten counts of attempted murder.
Acting Provincial Commissioner Major-General Thandiswa Kupiso and Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane have both called for calm.
“Violence and retaliation have no place in our communities,” Premier Mabuyane said, emphasizing the importance of unity.
The Sundays River Valley Municipality has also urged residents to avoid taking the law into their own hands. Community leaders are working to ease tensions and find a peaceful resolution.
