Life-Changing Surgeries Begin in East London
EAST LONDON- The Smile Foundation, in collaboration with the Eastern Cape Department of Health, launched a special surgical week at Frere Hospital from July 21 to 27, 2025, focusing on surgeries for children with cleft lips, burns and congenital conditions.
During a media briefing, Dr. Rolene Wagner, Head of the Eastern Cape Department of Health highlighted the initiative’s positive impact on families, stating, “Every child who receives a procedure has a family whose burdens are lightened.”
Dr. Van der Walt, Head of Plastic Surgery, emphasized the importance of teamwork, noting that 14 young patients are scheduled for surgeries.
Sylvia Passoni, COO of the Smile Foundation, thanked partners like Spur Restaurant and Discovery Healthcare for their support, while Andy Brewis from Spur stressed the importance of giving back to the community.
One young patient, a 6-year-old boy from Xhorha, is set to undergo surgery. His mother expressed her heartfelt gratitude, saying, “We are so thankful for this opportunity. Our child’s future is looking brighter, and we can’t thank you enough for giving us hope.”
As the surgical week progresses, the Smile Foundation and Frere Hospital are committed to continuing their partnership and making a meaningful difference in the lives of children and families in need.
