Award-winning journalist, Asanda Magaqa is speaking out after a near-fatal car accident in East London.
Magaqa’s car crashed after she swerved to avoid a pothole on a dark, unlit road at Beaconhurst Road to Batting Road on Freedom Day.
Despite sustaining major bruising and internal injuries, she was rescued by two couples who chased away a stranger rummaging through her car while she was unconscious.
Magaqa’s vehicle was declared a total write-off, but she’s grateful to be alive.
“I was driving alone. I lost consciousness and was rescued by two couples,”
The former SABC News anchor is now warning others about the dangers of driving on poorly maintained roads at night, citing safety risks and the challenges of dealing with insurance providers.
“My warning is for all of us to be extra careful driving at night on our roads, especially because their conditions make them extra hazardous, once the accident happens we are not safe even from potential criminals,” she said.
The traumatic experience has left her hesitant to drive at night, even with a courtesy car.
“The hostility of insurance providers who interrogate the driving behaviour of someone facing impending danger & the trauma thereof after the fact only make the post traumatic experience harder and prolongs healing. As matters stars, even with the courtesy car provided by insurance I’m still reluctant to drive at night.”
Magaqa is now recovering from physical and psychological trauma from the accident.
