EASTERN CAPE BATTLES WITH HFMD OUTBREAK
EAST LONDON-The Eastern Cape Department of Health has confirmed 13 cases of Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD) in the province, sparking concerns among parents, educators and the community.
Siyanda Manana the department spokesperson stated, “We understand the anxiety this outbreak has caused and we’re doing everything possible to contain the spread.”
Most of the cases have been reported in Buffalo City Metro, with 7 children seen by clinicians and 1 by a pharmacist.
Manana emphasized the highly contagious nature of the virus and urged public cooperation to prevent further transmission. “HFMD is caused by enteroviruses and commonly infects children under 10 years old,” he said. Symptoms include fever, sore throat, fatigue, loss of appetite and small blisters.
Parents are advised to monitor their children for signs of dehydration or high fever and seek medical attention if necessary.
To control the spread, the Department of Health is emphasizing good hand washing and avoiding close contact with infected individuals.
